The International Housing Association

Within the next five years there could be a cross – border housing association, this is according to the founder of an international housing consultancy.

Carne Koppelaar, managing director of Global Habitat, was speaking at the International Housing Summit in Rotterdam. He included in his speech that there was no longer any barriers to co – operation between providers from different countries.

‘I am convinced that in five years we will see the first international group structure. There are no barriers left.’

He then told housing website Inside Housing, within the next two to three years the first co operative of housing associations could become a reality. He then added that there were no longer restrictions of capital flow between member states.

Mr Koppelaar spoke about a case that was won in 2006. Servatius, a Dutch landlord, won a court ruling allowing it to invest in an E15 million housing project in Liege, Belgium.

He also made a comparison between the current situation to the utilities sector, where in the past two decades there has been significant consolidation.

‘Twenty years ago we all had our national energy providers and now there are just a few big ones left. It’s the same with phone companies.’

Some major UK housing associations have been talking to Mr Koppelaar about possibly establishing international co – operatives, describing them as the ‘front runners’ in the process.

He then added: ‘Housing associations are not mature yet. We don’t have a clear picture of what we want to achieve. An international housing association can get these economies of scale that we need.’
