A greener way of doing DIY

More than £14 billion a year is spent by people on DIY accessories. Money is spent on timber, paint, varnishes and more when DIY projects are started in the home.

There are ways though to reduce your impact on the environment. By reusing materials and tools, buy greener paints and more you could do your bit to help the environment.

There are some projects out there that you may want to think twice about, they can add a lot of money onto your energy bills and also they can harm the environment.

By choosing your jobs wisely you could make a difference to the environment. Carrying out work on your home can save energy, water and also money. Here are some examples of projects that you can carry out around the home.

• Insulating your home can save energy and reduce bills as nearly half the heat lost in an average home is through the roof and walls.
• Loft insulation can take just a few hours to fit, and insulating your hot water tank can be another quick job.
• Fix dripping taps or overflows – two drips a second adds up to about 26 litres a day, but a washer costs a few pence and can be fitted in minutes.
• Fitting aerators or spray fittings to your basin tops can reduce the amount of water you use by up to 50 %*

There are some projects out there that you may want to think twice about, they can add a lot of money onto your energy bills and also they can harm the environment.

For example, if you have a conservatory try to resist putting any heating in there. Conservatories tend to have less insulation than normal buildings so more heat is likely to escape.

If you are garden proud and like to have light and water features, try to install solar powered features to save on electricity bills and use natural power.
